Eye Vitamins & Nutrients: Evidence-Conscious Guide
A practical overview of nutrients commonly discussed for eye health and why formulation, dose and population matter.
Eye nutrition is broader than supplements. A balanced diet, regular eye care and management of medical risk factors matter; supplements are one optional tool for specific situations.
Carotenoids
Lutein and zeaxanthin are plant-derived carotenoids found in the retina and lens and in foods such as leafy green vegetables. They are also components of the AREDS2 formulation.
Vitamins and minerals
Vitamin A is essential to normal visual function, while vitamins C and E, zinc and copper appear in the AREDS/AREDS2 research context at specific amounts. High-dose formulas are not the same as ordinary multivitamins.
Food first, when appropriate
Food provides a broad nutrient matrix. Supplements may be recommended in specific situations, but they should not be treated as a substitute for diagnosis or routine eye care.
