Lutein for Eye Health: Food, Supplements & Evidence

What lutein is, where it occurs, how it relates to the retina, and what AREDS2 does and does not establish.

Editorially reviewedUpdated September 2026Independent affiliate publication

Lutein is a carotenoid found in leafy greens and in the human retina. It is commonly paired with zeaxanthin in eye supplements.

What AREDS2 tells us

AREDS2 used lutein 10 mg plus zeaxanthin 2 mg within a larger formulation for specific people at risk of advanced AMD. NEI says people with no AMD or early AMD were not shown to benefit from the AREDS formulation.

Food sources

Leafy green vegetables are notable dietary sources. A food-based pattern and a clinical high-dose formulation are different contexts and should not be treated as interchangeable.

Shopping implication

If a product advertises lutein, check the amount and the intended claim rather than assuming the presence of lutein makes the whole product clinically validated.
